Now that the end of summer is heading our way and our book club is getting started again, it’s the perfect time for a Grapes of Wrap Charcuterie Board – pun and fun intended!  It’s so easy to customize this board with a selection of wrap sandwiches, seasonal fresh grapes and a few sweet treats - I'm sure that John Steinbeck would approve!

​This isn’t just for book club gatherings – it’s also perfect for a picnic at your favorite winery – don’t forget a corkscrew and wine glasses!  There’s no better way to enjoy a beautiful day outside than with a wine country picnic!

NO GRAPES OF WRATH...WE LOVE GRAPES & WRAPS!

For starters, make it easy - and make it FUN!  Even if it is just a few of us getting together for book club or just the family on a quiet night or weekend, we always love easy gatherings in a casual, relaxed setting to laugh and just have fun.  And this great Grapes of Wrap Charcuterie Board can transition to the perfect Winery Picnic, or autumn baby or bridal shower as well.

The secret of a great charcuterie board is to find fresh flavors and textures that work for you and your friends.  Mix and match your favorite cheeses, meats, fruits, nuts and condiments for something wonderful and unique every time!  And if you can throw in a great theme, all the better!

For this special board, I used a selection of fresh seasonal grapes, hand-crafted wraps and roll-up sandwiches, artisanal crackers with rosemary, raisins and pecans, and sweet chocolate covered raisins to round out my “grape” theme.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GRAPES...

​Grapes come in an abundance of colors, textures, sizes and flavors.  Depending on the variety, grapes are perfect for snacking or made into delicious jams, juices ad wines.  Whether you prefer an intensely sweet taste or a more tart flavor, there are many grape varieties to choose from – all of which are packed with health-promoting nutrients.  Here are some of our favorites:

• Champagne Grapes are probably the sweetest of all!  These tiny grapes are usually available in the autumn – both Trader Joe’s and Whole Food Markets have them available fresh during early autumn.  Sweet clusters of either black seedless champagne grapes or white seedless champagne grapes are always fun for garnishing with, and even more fun to eat!  My little ones ADORE these!
• Concord Grapes have a deep bluish-purple jewel tone, and make the BEST flavorful concord grape juices, jellies and jams.  They are also packed with flavonoid antioxidants that offer anticancer, anti-inflammatory and heart-health benefits.
• Ruby Seedless Grapes are also known as Crimson Grapes – with a lovely dark pink skin and green flesh.  These California grapes have a sweet taste and crisp texture, perfect for snacking!
• Red Globe Grapes are a large, seeded table grape enjoyed around the world – but my family does NOT like the seeds!  To save myself the time of cutting these large rosy grapes in half and scooping out the seeds, I tend to steer away from them for salads, snacking and charcuterie boards. 
• Green Seedless Grapes (which are actually white table grapes) are most often referred to as Thompson Seedless grapes.  These seedless sweet green grapes were named after William Thompson, who popularized this sweet variety in America – and they are the most popular grapes today.
• Cotton Candy Grapes were first produced in California and everyone loves these hybrid grapes.  They are available in both a light green and a light pink version, and taste oddly similar to cotton candy.  These grapes are slightly higher in sugar than Concord grapes, but are packed with nutrients such as vitamin C, fiber and potassium – a smart snacking choice that will satisfy your sweet tooth!
• Moon Drop Grapes have a unique shape and delightfully sweet taste – an interesting grape variety that stands out from other seedless black grapes.  These large, deep blue (almost black) grapes are long and tubular in shape, have a cute little dimple on one end, and a surprisingly crunchy texture. 
• Black Muscat Grapes are versatile and a favorite table grape that is also used for making several types of wine, including dessert wines and dry red wines.  These large bluish-black grapes are deliciously sweet and juicy, have a floral aroma and pair perfectly with salty, rich foods like cheeses – perfect for charcuterie boards!
• Autumn  Royal Grapes were created in California, but are hard to find here in Ohio.  These large seedless grapes have a deep purple skin and lime green flesh – they are among the largest seedless grape varieties available – if you can find them!

WRAPS & ROLL-UP SANDWICHES:

FAVORITE WINES:  Pick a few of your favorites and you’ve got an instant party!  You can’t go wrong with a red and white, something dry and something sweet:

• A good Pinot Noir
• Cabernet Sauvignon
• Moscato
• Zinfandel
• Merlot
• Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc
• For something special, serve with a spicy Autumn Sangria or Sparkling Cider

 
HOW I MADE THIS:

1. Choose a nice solid cutting board or wooden serving tray to create your platter.  Your guests will be serving directly from the board, so be sure to use something sturdy.  You can always add additional platters if you are preparing this for a crowd!
2. Assemble your favorites and place on serving board, starting with small wood or ceramic bowls to hold small items (we’ll fill those later).
3. If you’re using curly-leaf lettuce around the edges of your board for garnish, now is the time to add them.
4. Wraps and rollups were next on the board – group like with like.
5. Artisanal crackers can be layered or tucked into sides and corners. 
6. Wash and pat the fresh grapes dry, and tuck them in to fill all the empty spaces.
7. Next up – fill small bowls with the sweet chocolate covered raisins.
8. For serving, have small tongs next to the board along with appetizer plates and napkins. 
9. Start with small amounts of each item – you can always refresh your platter as time goes by!
   
   

YIELD:  This was the perfect board for 8 – but it serves a crowd!  Let the good times roll!
 
VINEYARD CHARCUTERIE PICNIC:
Rather than placing everything on a charcuterie board, create the perfect late-summer picnic by packing everything up in a picnic basket or cooler.  Simply pack “like with like” in individual containers – i.e. one container for each type of wrap, one for fresh fruits and vegetables, and one for sweet treats - and you’re ready to go!  Just don’t forget your cork screw and wine glasses!
