Sore throat? Cough? Sniffles? Feeling under the weather? Now it’s easy to enjoy the delicious and soothing comfort of a homemade Starbuck’s Medicine Ball (also called Honey Citrus Mint Tea or Cold Buster Tea) at home with this super easy recipe! My family has been adding honey and lemon to their tea forever, and my dad was famous for making hot lemonade (full of pulp) for years when he had a cold. It helps having family and friends who are Starbuck's baristas who can help de-code the recipes for us! What was once a customer special order and then a secret menu item is now a regular item on Starbucks official menu - at $4.50 a cup! I think the trick with the Medicine Ball is the combination of citrus, mint, and fruity flavors - and making it at home is so much cheaper and convenient! HOW DO I MAKE A MEDICINE BALL AT HOME?LEMON JUICE OR LEMONADE: You can use bottled lemonade or freshly squeezed juice, whichever you prefer. TEA: For an authentic taste, I use Teavana Peach Tranquility, which is an herbal tea with chamomile and citrus) and Teavana Jade Citrus Mint, which is a green tea blend with spearmint and lemongrass. I honestly believe that the chamomile, citrus, mint and lemongrass are part of the magic in this recipe, but you can substitute other types of quality tea - experiment to see what you like best. HONEY: You don't need anything fancy or flavored, but the honey is really important to accent the mint and citrus flavors. Some people like to use organic local honey. Whatever you choose, the honey also soothes sore throats. MINT OR GINGER: When you order this at Starbucks, you can also ask for a pump of peppermint syrup, but if you don't have Mint Simple Syrup at home, one drop of pure mint extract or oil works as well. Rather than the mint, I sometimes add a pinch of microplaned fresh ginger to the mix – which is great for soothing an upset tummy - think of ginger ale! WILL IT REALLY HELP ME FEEL BETTER?Skipper has been feeling a little bit under the weather, and nothing seemed to be helping until he tried a steaming mug of Medicine Ball Tea. He LOVES it and really feels much better after a cup or two. I keep all of the ingredients on hand so that we can mix up a batch of these whenever we need to! Other family and friends also swear by its soothing properties. If you're feeling under the weather and trying to keep hydrated, you can't go wrong with a cup or two. Fresh lemons or lemonade, herbal and black tea, fresh peach flavor, chamomile, citrus, mint and lemongrass - all combine in a soothing warm drink that helps clear your head, soothe your throat and calm your tummy. Not sure if it's magic or not, but sometimes the old remedies work best!
