Who hasn't enjoyed a handful of Trail Mix over the years? Whether you are camping or backpacking, on a jaunt to the park with the kids, or just need a handful of something good to munch on, this is perfect! I start with a basic homemade granola recipe that we have enjoyed for years - a light maple glaze, and perfectly chewy and crunchy. This homemade version is so much better than anything you can buy at the store - and you can have it in the oven in less than ten minutes, and still have a few minutes left over! This is the perfect snack to make for a group. One of the things I have done with our Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts through the years is to ask each individual to bring their favorite ingredient to add to the mix. The old-fashioned oatmeal and nuts are baked with a light maple and cinnamon glaze. I usually add some nut butter - stir in your favorite peanut, almond, cashew or sunflower butter. I add some nuts - slivered almonds, pecans, peanuts (whatever I have on hand) and some sunflower or pumpkin seeds. This serves as the base. Then the fun begins - the kids add their raisins, craisins, dried blueberries, apricots or mangos; freeze dried strawberries, raspberries or blueberries, yogurt covered raisins, chocolate or butterscotch chips, mini-pretzels, and there is usually a nice addition of Reese's pieces, M&M's and skittles. Always colorful, always different, and always fun! Mix everything together, fill a baggie and seal tight - and you are ready to hit the road. Perfect for planes, trains and automobiles! Happy trails to you! Our Trail Mix Granola joins the Granola shelf line-up - but it may very well be the kids' favorite version!
