Christmas just isn't Christmas until the Spritz Cookies are baked! As surely as every yuletide season turned, Mom would get out her "cookie gun" and enlist us kids to sort out the candies to decorate these favorite holiday cookies - always silver sugar balls or red M&M's for the Christmas Trees, and yellow M&M's for the center of each poinsettia. And the tradition has been passed down generation to generation! My littles love watching the "cookie gun" in action now - they are absolutely fascinated watching the cookies appear out of the cookie press! Now there are even more candies available to decorate with - snowflakes, colorful jimmies and nonpareils, and edible glitter. It's so hard to choose! I really like the look of sparkling sugar and snowflakes, but sprinkles and jimmies are so fun too! After growing up watching my Mom use a cookie gun, I purchased an electronic Presto Cookie Gun years ago, and I'm kinda shocked that they aren't manufactured or sold now, and run for more than a hundred dollars if you can find them on eBay. Let's just say that I'm pretty careful about taking good care of this little item, and it's one of the few things I don't lend out from my kitchen. I guess the secret is to just find a cookie press that works for you - Oxo makes a great one that is reasonably priced, but it is really about finding the one that just works the best for you. And most bakers will tell you that it's the cookie dough that really makes the difference between a fantastic cookie experience and a complete nightmare! This butter cookie recipe for Spritz Cookies has ALWAYS worked well for us, and it has been passed down from generation to generation. And every time that I make them I wonder why we only make them at Christmas time, as they just the most perfect little cookie, and take little to no time at all to make! Hope that you enjoy our family recipe as much as we do!
