What makes something an heirloom? Five generations and lots of love! This is the classic fudge frosting that both of my grandmothers and Mom made ALL the time - an heirloom recipe that is perfect on brownies, sheet cake, as a glaze for bundt cakes, or drizzled over ice cream. Every year Skipper requests a homemade yellow cake with this fudge frosting for his December birthday, and my little guy usually wants homemade banana cake with this fudge frosting for his birthday too. Hands down, it's everyone's favorite! I remember standing on a stool watching my Gram make this for her famous brownies, and after waiting what seemed like a century for it to cool down, lucky me always got to lick the spoon! Birthday rules prevail though - if it's your birthday, you get to lick the whisk and clean out the pan! And this is just so stinking fast and easy to make! Melt butter in a heavy saucepan, add granulated sugar and milk, and boil for three minutes without stirring. Remove from the stove, and pour in chocolate chips and pure vanilla extract. Wait three minutes, and it's ready to pour! This fudge frosting is hot and a little on the thin side at this point - not at all like a buttercream frosting or fudge frosting that has cocoa powder and powdered sugar as ingredients. You really do simply pour it over the top of your fresh baked and cooled brownies or sheet cake. (Make sure that your brownies or cake are cooled to room temperature - the fudge frosting may bubble up into a HUGE bubble if you pour hot frosting on a hot cake...or so I've heard or maybe experienced when I was in a hurry and couldn't wait!) And unless you like an uncontrolled hot fudge frosting drizzle oozing out from layers of a layer cake, this really works best on sheet cakes or brownies. The fudge will start to set as soon as you get it poured out of the pan - so give it a quick swirl with an offset spatula if you want to smooth or twirl the top at all, sprinkle with your favorite sprinkles, and then just wait patiently. The fudge frosting will thicken as it cools and doesn't require any other attention. So simple, and so wonderful! Of all the special things I make and recipes that I share, I think that Grama's Fudge Frosting is the one that gets requested the most frequently! Gotta run - they're fighting over the pan right now!
