I know that there are bakers that will shortcut and replace the buttermilk with "sour milk" (lemon juice or vinegar are added to milk which causes is to sour up), but for the best flavor, do yourself a favor and use fresh buttermilk. It really does make a difference in both the taste and texture.
This is our favorite recipe for silky cream cheese frosting as well - it is smooth and velvety, and spreads like silk. This recipe makes a LOT of cream cheese frosting - and depending on your group, you may have leftover to frost cupcakes with.
