I was probably only five or six at when I started making these with Mom, but I do remember a huge sense of pride that I was making one of Dad's favorites especially for him. This is the first Christmas without my Dad, so I think I'll be crying when I make them this year, but his smile and wink when he would eat these are a wonderful memory!
Over the years, I have heard these cookies called by MANY other names...Russian Tea Cakes, Snowball Cookies, and even Mexican Wedding Cakes. I guess they are an international favorite!
The cookie itself is not overly sweet, so the powdered sugar is a must! Roll once when the cookies are warm from the oven, and then generously roll a second time when cool. When stored in an airtight container or frozen, the powdered sugar has a tendency to "melt" into the cookie, so you may want to roll again before serving if you want a more generous powdered sugar look to your cookies.
